Warm Up
by Steve Hass
January 2003

Here's something that I use to warm up before gigs. It's basic 8th note triplets and flams. The flams are placed on interesting parts of the beat creating over bar line phrases. Work on it slow at first. Then use the suggested tempo markings. )

Rhythmic Illusions - Part One
by Steve Hass

In jazz and more creative styles of music, I often like to shift accents from the typical 2 and four, to other beats in the bar. This gives the illusion of odd meters or turning around of the groove. I don't recommend trying this on a rock or pop gig, unless you want to get fired. HA!! Even if you don't play jazz or fusion, this a great exercise for centering your beat. And remember, use a metronome when working on this.
  1. Here we are moving the swing beat to the last 8th note triplet, making that the strong part of the groove.

  2. Here I took a basic paradiddle funk groove and moved it foward an eight note.
